How to Get Recommended by AI: What Earns a ChatGPT Citation

How to get recommended by AI in ChatGPT comes down to three things: ChatGPT has to be allowed to reach your site, your pages have to answer the question a buyer asked, and other sources have to describe you the same way. When those line up, ChatGPT has something it can cite. When one is missing, it cites someone else.

This guide looks at the citation itself: the small source link under a ChatGPT answer, and what a business can do to be the page behind it.

Why the citation matters more than the mention

A mention is your name in the answer. A citation is a link to your page as the evidence. The citation is the part you can influence most directly, because it points to something you wrote.

It also matters because fewer people click through to check. The Pew Research Center studied Google searches by 900 U.S. adults and found that people clicked a link inside an AI summary in just 1% of visits to pages that had one. That study was about Google, not ChatGPT, but the lesson carries over: most readers take the written answer at face value. What the answer says about you is what they remember.

So the goal isn't only traffic. It's being the source the answer is built on, so the description of your business is accurate and comes from you.

How ChatGPT finds pages to cite

ChatGPT's search features use OpenAI's own crawlers. OpenAI's crawler documentation lists three that matter to a business website:

CrawlerWhat OpenAI says it doesWhat it means for you
OAI-SearchBot"used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features"Block it and ChatGPT search can't surface your pages
ChatGPT-UserMay visit a page "when users ask ChatGPT or a CustomGPT a question"A live visit prompted by a real question
GPTBotCrawls content "that may be used in training" OpenAI's modelsSeparate from search; you can block it and still allow search

OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and says it can take about 24 hours for its systems to adjust after you change that file. The practical point: plenty of businesses blocked "AI bots" as a group a while ago and never looked again. If OAI-SearchBot is on that list, nothing else in this guide will help. Ask whoever runs your site to check robots.txt and any firewall or hosting rule that blocks bots.

Once ChatGPT can reach you, the page has to be worth citing. A citation supports a specific sentence in the answer, so the page needs a specific sentence to support.

Write one page per real question

Buyers ask ChatGPT things like "Who does emergency HVAC repair for restaurants in Dayton?" or "What should I ask a small-business accountant before hiring one?" A page that answers one question clearly is easier to cite than a home page that gestures at everything.

Put the facts in text

Hours, service areas, licenses, what's included and what isn't should be written on the page as plain text. A fact that only appears inside an image, a PDF or a pop-up is harder for any crawler to read.

Keep it current

An old page describing a service you dropped can end up quoted as if it were true today. Remove or update pages that no longer match what you sell. ChatGPT can only be as accurate as what it finds.

Make outside sources agree with your site

ChatGPT doesn't rely on your website alone. Pew found that Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit were the most commonly linked sources in Google's AI summaries and in standard results alike. For a local or professional-services firm, the outside sources that matter are usually closer to home: your Google Business Profile, trade association listings, local press and review sites.

What matters is that they agree. If your website lists several counties, a directory lists only your home county, and an old press piece lists a different phone number, an engine has conflicting evidence. Clean up the listings you control and correct the ones you can.

What doesn't earn citations

Some tactics sound useful and aren't worth the effort:

Write down the questions your buyers actually ask, phrased the way they'd say them, including your town. Run them in ChatGPT with search on and note which sources it links. Then run the same list in Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews, because each engine draws on different sources.

Look for patterns. If a competitor keeps getting cited, open the page ChatGPT links to and compare it with yours. Often the difference is plain: their page answers the question in the first paragraph and yours doesn't. If you'd rather have that done as a structured audit with a list of fixes, Vector Index explains how to get recommended by AI and what the audit covers.

Re-run the same questions every month. One check is a snapshot; a monthly list shows whether your fixes are working.

FAQ

Does ChatGPT always cite its sources?

No. ChatGPT shows source links when it searches the web for an answer. Answers drawn only from what the model already learned may have no links at all, which is why being findable in search matters.

If I block GPTBot, will ChatGPT stop citing me?

Not by itself. OpenAI describes GPTBot as its training crawler and OAI-SearchBot as the one that surfaces sites in ChatGPT search. You can block the first and allow the second.

Do I need special code or markup to get cited?

There's no special file that guarantees a ChatGPT citation. Clear text, accurate business details and pages that answer real questions do more than any tag.

How long after fixing my site will ChatGPT notice?

OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to register. Content changes depend on when your pages are crawled again, so check back over the following weeks rather than the next morning.

Learning how to get recommended by AI in ChatGPT starts with letting OpenAI's search crawler in, then giving it a clear, current page that answers the exact question your buyer asked.
